Additional national sources and unresolved definitions
  • China: NBS August 2026 energy release, published September 15. Crude-processing figures are not diesel output. JODI gas/diesel observations are used where available.
  • India: PPAC product consumption. High-speed and light diesel are national categories in mass units. No unreconciled tonnes-to-barrels estimate is appended to the JODI series.
  • Brazil: ANP open data. Petroleum diesel production, blended diesel sales and biodiesel must be reconciled separately. A compatible monthly GASDIES series is not yet integrated.
  • Russia: Rosstat July 2026 industrial release, August 26. No complete, compatible monthly production, consumption and export series was reconstructed. Missing entries remain missing.

These sources were investigated on October 10, 2026. They do not justify calling this monthly sample global. No proprietary cargo feed is connected; comprehensive current export flows may require a licensed provider.

Global annual benchmark · separate from monthly samples

IEA Oil 2025, page 15 estimates 2024 global gasoil/diesel consumption at 28.3 mb/d. Its June 2025 outlook projects 28.4 in 2026, 28.5 in 2027–2028 and 28.3 in 2030. These are dated forecasts including non-refinery contributions, not extensions of the observed country sample. The linked capacity model keeps refinery diesel and allocated biodiesel separate.

JODI gross gas/diesel exports, kb/d. Baseline is the arithmetic average of January and February 2026; both months must be present. Latest periods differ and are shown explicitly. Missing values are not zero. Differences are not deducted from global refinery production.

IEA September 2026 OMR separately reports Gulf net diesel/gasoil exports of 390 kb/d in August and a combined Gulf/Russia reduction of 1,600 kb/d versus February. This different definition and period is not combined with the JODI gross-export table. Export reductions can reflect domestic demand, shipping or policy as well as lost production.

Is global diesel getting tighter or looser?

The headline describes stock momentum in a matched reporting-country cohort. Faster draws or slower builds mean tightening there. It cannot establish a complete global verdict, and the observation month states how far behind today the evidence is.

How is the direction calculated?

Monthly stock change is divided by the number of calendar days in that month. The mean of the last two monthly rates is compared with the mean of the preceding three. A decline greater than 0.05 million barrels/day is tightening; an increase greater than that is loosening; the interval between is little change.

Does tightening always mean inventories are falling?

No. Stocks can still be building while the pace slows. The direction compares recent stock momentum with the preceding period. The stock rate beside the headline states whether the recent absolute movement was a build or draw.

Why do samples differ?

Each indicator uses every valid submission for its own month. Missing stocks cannot suppress production or demand. Monthly composition can change and counts are shown; only stock momentum uses a fixed stock-only sample.

Is 0.05 million barrels/day statistically significant?

No. This is an editorial dead band intended to avoid calling small changes a new direction. It is not a confidence interval, an optimized trading threshold or a forecast-performance claim.

What counts as diesel here?

JODI GASDIES is gas/diesel oil, a middle-distillate category that includes heating gasoil. It is broader than road diesel and differs from the US distillate series. The categories are not merged.

What is the supply line?

It is reported refinery gross output of gas/diesel oil in the included countries, measured in million barrels/day. Imports are available separately in the table; the output line is not total available supply.

What is demand?

It is the JODI reported gas/diesel demand field TOTDEMO. Country statistical practices and revisions affect comparability. It is not a real-time count of vehicle consumption.

Can I subtract output from demand?

Not to infer a global balance. The independent country sets differ, and refinery production omits other supply. Trade, transfers and statistical differences also prevent that subtraction from reconciling inventories.

Are imports and exports a global balance?

No. Trade cancels only in a complete world balance with consistent definitions. In a partial cohort, trade with excluded countries remains a material outlet or supply source.

Which countries are included?

Every indicator has its own country list and observation dates in the tables and JSON. China can appear in output without stocks. Older Indian reports remain at their original dates; countries with no compatible observation are missing.

What happens to missing values?

Unavailable and confidential observations are omitted. They are never replaced with zero or carried forward. A zero closing-stock submission is excluded as an unusable stock measure; valid zero trade or output is retained.

How is the latest month selected?

Each indicator’s summary chooses its newest month with at least fifteen reporting countries. Its history still includes all available reports. Separately, the stock signal chooses at least fifteen countries with six usable consecutive stock months.

How often does JODI update?

JODI publishes monthly, normally around the twentieth. Country lags vary. StorageCurve checks through its existing scheduled updater; the collection timestamp and latest observation month are displayed separately.

Can the data change later?

Yes. JODI country submissions can be revised. Each refresh recomputes the matched cohort and direction from the current source files. A source failure retains the last good payload rather than generating substitute observations.

Does this predict diesel prices?

No. Inventories and flows provide physical context. Freight, specification, taxes, crude costs, geography and expectations can move prices independently of the cohort stock trend.

Where is the faster signal?

The US diesel tightness page has weekly EIA crack, stocks, output and product-pull context. It is a faster regional check and is explicitly separate from this lagged international reporting cohort.

Does a national stock total include every tank?

No. JODI closing stocks follow each reporting system and generally cover primary stocks. Coverage of commercial and government holdings differs; these values are not a universal measure of usable diesel.

Can I reproduce or download the result?

Normalized JSON includes per-indicator monthly totals, counts, country lists and latest submissions, the stock-only cohort and source file URLs. Stock momentum can be reproduced from the six reported inventory points. The updater re-reads the official JODI CSV files.

What should I check next?

Compare the weekly US tightness signal for timeliness and the refining capacity outlook for structural constraints. Regional specification or shipping problems can persist even when aggregate refinery capacity is adequate.
