About this series
A price difference with two regional inputs.
Keep the benchmarks distinct
EIA’s Brent series is labelled Europe Brent Spot Price FOB. WTI is the Cushing spot reference. Neither is a live futures quote or an identification of the licensed Platts assessment.
Match the period
Daily spreads use identical dates. Longer resolutions subtract the two published period averages; different underlying daily coverage can affect that comparison. Missing observations are never carried forward.
Check physical confirmation
Price history is one market input. Cushing stocks, US crude flows and global supply and demand provide separate physical evidence; none guarantees a future price movement.

Brent–WTI Spot Price Spread questions
Benchmarks, dates, calculations and the limits of spot-price comparisons.
Is Dated Brent a new standard?
No. Dated Brent has been used for decades as a physical crude benchmark. It remains part of the Brent complex alongside forward markets and futures; those instruments price different delivery arrangements and are not interchangeable.
Which Brent price is shown here?
The exact source is EIA’s Europe Brent Spot Price FOB series, RBRTE. EIA identifies Refinitiv, an LSEG business, as its petroleum spot-price source. This page does not claim to reproduce the licensed Platts PCAAS00 assessment.
Is this a live Brent quote?
No. These are delayed published observations collected through EIA API v2. The observation date tells you which period was priced; the retrieval timestamp only records when StorageCurve fetched the data.
Are Platts, Argus and Reuters assessments identical?
No. EIA describes multiple firms assessing the Dated Brent market. Each assessment has its own methodology and source identity. We retain EIA’s series name rather than silently relabelling it as a different vendor’s assessment.
How does physical Brent differ from ICE Brent futures?
Physical spot prices refer to cargoes for near-term delivery. A futures contract refers to its specified later contract period. A difference between them can reflect delivery timing and market conditions; this page contains no ICE futures prices.
Are daily, weekly, monthly and annual prices different benchmarks?
They are different time resolutions of the same EIA series. Daily values are spot observations; EIA calculates weekly, monthly and annual values as unweighted averages of available daily closing spot prices.
How are monthly and annual prices calculated?
The page retrieves EIA’s own monthly and annual aggregates independently. It does not average weekly averages to invent monthly prices. Only completed monthly and annual periods are included; there is no unlabelled year-to-date annual value.
Why are weekends or holidays missing?
A daily price history contains published trading observations rather than a value for every calendar day. We do not insert a zero or carry a previous price forward when a date is absent. A line joins available observations only.
What does the change figure compare?
It subtracts the preceding available observation in the selected frequency from the latest observation. It is expressed in dollars per barrel. The comparison period is printed beside the change; it is not necessarily the preceding calendar day.
Does a recent retrieval timestamp mean a fresh price?
No. Retrieval time and observation date are separate. A recently fetched annual observation can still refer to last year. The daily source age is shown separately, and a failed refresh preserves the previous successful payload and its original timestamp.
Which crudes are included in Platts Dated Brent?
Platts describes Brent Ninian Blend, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, Troll and WTI Midland in its assessment framework. Those are benchmark constituent grades, not the selectable time series on this page. The EIA source is shown under its own title.
Is WTI Midland the same as WTI at Cushing?
No. WTI Midland delivered into the European benchmark framework and the WTI spot reference at Cushing, Oklahoma describe different locations and delivery arrangements. The comparison page uses EIA’s Cushing series, not a Midland cargo assessment.
Does a high Brent price prove an inventory shortage?
No. Prices can reflect expected disruption, currency moves, refinery demand, freight, grade differences and financial conditions as well as physical availability. Check inventory and flow data separately before drawing conclusions about supply.
Can this chart predict the next price move?
No. It shows published price history. It contains no trading signal, price target, fitted forecast or guarantee that a historical relationship will persist. Related inventory pages provide additional physical-market context.
Why compare prices with Cushing inventories?
Cushing is the location of the EIA WTI spot reference. Its inventories can add context for local supply and logistics. They do not by themselves explain or determine either Brent prices or the Brent–WTI spread.
What unit is used?
Every price and spread is shown in nominal US dollars per barrel. Values are not adjusted for inflation, converted to another currency or multiplied into cargo values. A dollar change is distinct from a percentage return.
Can historical values be revised?
Yes. The updater retrieves provider history again so revised observations can replace earlier values. A stored chart is a snapshot of the retrieval date, not a guarantee that every historical value will remain unchanged.
How much history is available?
The collector requests data from 1987 onward and publishes the actual returned observations. The All view shows the available history in the selected frequency. The spread starts only when both series have matching provider periods.
What happens when the provider refresh fails?
The previous complete payload is retained with its original generation and observation dates. We do not publish a partial collection as a successful refresh. The page displays the daily source age so older data remains apparent.
Does EIA access grant permission to republish any vendor data?
Not automatically. EIA’s reuse policy distinguishes government-created information from protected third-party material. Source acknowledgement and delayed display do not themselves establish redistribution rights; downstream reuse must follow the applicable source terms.
How is the Brent–WTI spread calculated?
Europe Brent Spot Price FOB minus Cushing, Oklahoma WTI Spot Price FOB, in USD per barrel. Only identical provider periods are joined. For example, Brent at 80 and WTI at 75 gives a positive spread of 5 dollars per barrel.
What does a negative spread mean?
It means WTI Cushing is above Brent in that matched observation or period average. A positive value means Brent is above WTI. Neither sign alone establishes whether either price will rise or fall next.
Is this the Dated-to-Frontline spread?
No. Dated-to-Frontline relates physical Brent to a Brent derivatives reference. This page compares two spot benchmarks, Europe Brent and WTI Cushing. It contains no futures price or contract-roll adjustment.
Are aggregated spreads averages of matched daily spreads?
Not necessarily. Weekly, monthly and annual spread values are the difference of EIA’s two published period averages. The two underlying daily samples can differ, so that result need not equal an average calculated only over common daily dates.
Can I read the spread as an export profit?
No. Export economics also depend on pipeline costs, freight, timing, quality, financing and delivery terms. The simple spot difference is not a netback, arbitrage profit or a direct estimate of shipping demand.
What if the latest Brent and WTI dates differ?
The headline spread uses the latest date present in both series. The page also shows each source’s latest period. A newer unmatched price is never paired with an older quote to manufacture an up-to-date spread.
Why can the spread widen?
Different regional balances, refinery needs, grade preferences, transport limits and disruption risks can affect the benchmarks differently. The chart records the difference without claiming which driver caused a particular move.
Why does this spread differ from a finance website?
Another website may use futures contracts, intraday quotes, a different price assessor or another subtraction direction. Compare the source series, delivery basis, observation timestamps and formula before comparing the numbers.
