About this series

Storage as Europe’s winter buffer.

European gas storage carries a different weight than its US counterpart. With a large share of supply arriving by pipeline and LNG cargo rather than from domestic production, storage is the continent’s primary shock absorber — the buffer between an interrupted delivery and unmet heating demand. Fullness heading into winter has become a closely watched policy figure, not only a market one.

Two numbers describe the same stock and answer different questions. The TWh level measures how much energy is actually held and is comparable across years. Percent of working capacity measures how much room remains before storage is full, which matters most during summer injection when the practical ceiling starts binding and injection demand falls away.

The five-year band deserves particular caution here. Europe’s supply mix changed substantially after 2022, and structural shifts in LNG import capacity, pipeline routes, and demand mean the prior five years may not describe what should now be considered normal. The comparison remains useful as a reference point — it is not a claim that the historical range is the correct target.

What AGSI reports, why the unit is energy rather than volume, and which countries the EU aggregate covers.

Where does the European gas storage data come from?

The AGSI transparency platform operated by Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE). StorageCurve uses the EU aggregate as supplied by GIE and credits the source beside the chart.

Why is EU storage measured in TWh rather than cubic metres?

AGSI reports the aggregate as stored energy in terawatt-hours. Energy is the more meaningful basis because gas from different sources varies in calorific value, so a given volume does not always represent the same usable energy.

What does the fullness percentage mean?

It expresses gas in storage as a share of technical working capacity across the aggregate. It answers a different question than the TWh level: how much room is left, rather than how much energy is stored.

Why show weekly figures when AGSI updates daily?

This dashboard is built for the big physical picture and for comparison against the weekly US releases. StorageCurve keeps the last available AGSI observation in each ISO week, which reduces noise without losing the seasonal shape.

Which countries are in the EU aggregate?

The aggregate covers EU member states with reported underground storage. AGSI also publishes non-EU countries such as the United Kingdom and Ukraine separately; those are not included in the EU figure shown here.

Can AGSI figures be revised after publication?

Yes. GIE notes that provider data can be changed, removed, or amended. The updater re-fetches history so corrected observations replace earlier values rather than accumulating duplicates.

Does this include LNG terminal inventories?

No. This series covers underground gas storage only. LNG terminal stock and send-out are published through GIE’s separate ALSI platform and are not part of the AGSI storage aggregate.
