These are EIA projections, not measurements, and they move a great deal between monthly editions. As one documented illustration: in its July 2026 edition the EIA revised its own 2026 Brent forecast down 14% and its 2026 world production forecast up 3.5% against the June edition published four weeks earlier. Revisions of that size within a single month are ordinary for this report. Treat the direction as a considered view worth knowing, and the precision as far softer than the decimal places imply. The chart below plots observed months only.

About this series
Two production totals that answer different questions.
Total liquids is broader than crude
Petroleum and other liquid fuels production is the broad supply measure used in the global oil balance. It includes crude oil plus natural gas plant liquids, biofuels, refinery processing gain, and other liquid fuels. Crude oil production is the narrower wellhead measure. Showing both prevents a broad liquids total from being mistaken for crude alone.
What sits between the two lines
The distance between the two lines is not waste or unaccounted production. It is the non-crude portion of liquid fuels supply. That portion can change as biofuel output, gas liquids, and refinery gains move differently from conventional crude production, so the two series do not always grow at the same rate.
Balance first, production mix on demand
Production is a monthly flow, not an inventory level. The default Market balance mode therefore puts observed supply beside demand, the implied build or draw, and OPEC spare capacity. Production mix switches the same chart to broad liquids versus crude alone. Neither mode plots forecast months.

Global oil production FAQ
What each EIA production series contains, how crude differs from total liquids, and where the forecast begins.
Which EIA series does the global production page use?
It uses EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook API v2 series PAPR_WORLD for world petroleum and other liquid fuels production and COPR_WORLD for world crude oil production. Both are monthly and reported in million barrels per day.
Why are there two world oil production lines?
The broader line measures all petroleum and other liquid fuels, while the narrower line measures crude oil alone. Showing both makes the scope visible and prevents the total-liquids figure from being mistaken for wellhead crude production.
What is the difference between Market balance and Production mix?
Market balance is the decision view: observed supply against demand, implied stock change, and OPEC spare capacity. Production mix reuses the same chart area to compare broad petroleum and other liquids with crude oil alone. The switch avoids stacking another chart onto the page.
What is included in petroleum and other liquid fuels production?
In addition to crude oil, the broad EIA total includes natural gas plant liquids, biofuels, refinery processing gain, and other liquid fuels. That is why PAPR_WORLD is consistently higher than the crude-only COPR_WORLD series.
What does the gap between total liquids and crude oil mean?
It represents liquid fuels production outside the crude-only measure, principally natural gas liquids, biofuels, refinery gains, and other liquids. It is a difference in series scope, not missing or unaccounted oil.
Does the production chart include the EIA forecast?
No. The chart plots observed months only. EIA projection months are kept in a separate outlook array and presented in a clearly labelled text section above the chart so projected output is not drawn as if it were measured.
Where else are the production series shown?
The same two observed monthly production lines appear as context on the history views for US commercial crude inventories and Cushing inventories. They stop at the forecast boundary and do not affect seasonal averages or storage-pressure calculations.
Why is there no five-year storage average on this page?
Production is a flow measured in barrels per day, not a stock held in tanks. A storage percentile or fullness benchmark would have no physical meaning here, so the production series stays outside all inventory-seasonality calculations.
How often does global production data update?
The EIA normally publishes a new Short-Term Energy Outlook each month. Each edition can revise recent history as well as the forecast, so StorageCurve refreshes the complete monthly series rather than appending a single number.
