Measured tracking error · pbf-benchmark-check-v1
How close are the regional proxies?
2024Q3–2026Q2 · 8 completed quarters. We compare the mean of available, same-day EIA crack observations with the same-quarter benchmark published by PBF. These are benchmark tracking errors, not errors against realised margins or EPS forecasts.
Use East Coast and LA as level context; treat Chicago and SF more cautiously. SF is retained as a diagnostic trend proxy, not a dependable SF margin level. Chicago has a large historical outlier. The headline basket retains all five exposures: deleting a weak region would silently change what it represents. These raw comparisons remain unadjusted. A separate experimental regional adjustment is tested below.
USD per crude-input barrel. MAE = mean absolute error; bias = proxy minus PBF benchmark. Direction compares consecutive quarter changes; the sample is small.

Market context: regional errors can offset
The basket’s low error partly reflects cancellation. Its MAE is 0.83 $/bbl, versus 2.42 $/bbl for the weighted absolute regional errors on those same dates. Positive Chicago errors can offset negative Gulf Coast and SF errors. That cancellation may not persist.
For changes between consecutive quarters, the basket’s mean absolute tracking error is 1.31 $/bbl, versus 5.63 $/bbl if the published benchmark basket were simply assumed unchanged. This is a descriptive flat-change reference, not a forecast competition.
What this says about the next quarter: East Coast and LA have been closer level proxies in this sample. Chicago and SF need a wider allowance for error. This small quarterly sample cannot establish a reliable future error band, and none of these figures validates an earnings forecast. Daily tracking errors can be larger than errors in quarterly means.
Quarter-by-quarter comparisons and original PBF sources
Every accepted region/quarter comparison. Basket rows compare a constructed blend of published benchmarks, not a company-reported consolidated benchmark.
No calibration, regression or future price estimate is used in this raw validation. Daily cracks are recomputed from the published quote fields. Each regional leg uses only dates with every required input available; the basket requires all active legs on the same day. Each observation has equal weight within a quarter. This may differ from the price vendor’s averaging calendar.
Accept a completed quarter only with at least 80% of its calendar weekdays observed and a matched observation within seven calendar days of each boundary. Holidays count in the coverage denominator. Insufficient quarters are excluded, not filled. 0 region/quarter comparisons excluded in this run.
The basket check always uses the 2026Q2 throughput mix with LA/SF split 50/50. The adjustable West Coast control above does not alter this fixed-reference diagnostic. We reweight both proxy and published benchmarks identically. This is retrospective tracking validation with latest-reviewed weights and comparative report columns, not a point-in-time investment backtest. The SF and LA benchmarks are separate published indicators, although realised West Coast results are combined.
MAE averages absolute quarterly deviations. Bias averages signed deviations. Worst error is the largest observed absolute deviation, not a future limit. Direction matches exclude nonconsecutive quarters and flat published-benchmark changes. A direction match says nothing about the size of a move.
StorageCurve model · experimental regional basis adjustment
Adjusted regional margin indicators
Locations stay fixed; their price differences do not. We correct persistent regional bias with a simple additive offset: raw proxy minus the median historical proxy error. A median limits the influence of a single extreme quarter. No fitted slope or extra market inputs are used. The offset combines grade, crude and location substitution effects; it is not an observed transport premium.
Regional adjustments help; the total basket did not improve. Gulf Coast, LA and SF get a separately labelled experimental adjustment. East Coast stays raw because the test benefit was small; Chicago stays raw because the publication-lag check worsened. The headline index, charts, regional contributions and reported company figures remain raw.
Current matched date 2026-10-27 · USD/input barrel. Current offsets use all reviewed, published quarters available on 2026-11-02. Adjusted figures are model estimates, not observed benchmark quotes or PBF realised margins.

Does the correction help on later quarters?
Fit each region’s candidate offset on its first four quarters, freeze it, then test on later quarters. The current offset above is subsequently refitted on all available reviewed quarters; the scores below do not test that refit. The second check uses only prior-quarter report columns published before each test quarter began, with at least two training quarters.
Mean absolute benchmark tracking error, USD/bbl. Candidate corrections are tested for all five regions, even where no correction is enabled. Lower is better; sample counts are shown for each check.

Why the headline stays raw: on the same 4 later quarters, its MAE is 0.76 $/bbl raw versus 1.08 $/bbl with the three regional corrections combined. Better regional estimates can remove helpful cancellation in the aggregate.
Test rows, training periods and limitations
The first split is chronological, not publication-date aware: some reviewed comparative report columns were published later. The publication-lag check handles those report dates, but uses today’s price histories, not original release vintages. Neither test is a point-in-time trading backtest. The fixed latest throughput mix and assumed 50/50 West split apply to the aggregate comparison.
These are exploratory tests with a small sample. Our decision to enable three regions was informed by these results; there is no untouched final test set. No confidence band or future accuracy guarantee follows. The basis can change with transport, outages, fuel specifications and local supply/demand. Reassess the selected regions when new quarterly reports are reviewed. A constant correction changes a level; it cannot repair missed changes in the regional price basis.
Publication-lag-aware candidate checks. All offsets in each row use only the listed previously published quarters.

Q3 2026: the central estimate is $10.8 per share
The central case points to about $1.31 billion of underlying, fully-converted earnings, or $10.8 a share. The cautious and strong cases run from $6.5 to $13.3. These are our model scenarios, not company guidance, analyst consensus or a statistical confidence interval.
The quarter’s prices are in. What remains uncertain is how much of that market margin reached PBF’s results. The central case carries forward Q2’s regional margin capture and operating costs, with Q3 throughput at the midpoint of management’s published range. West Coast matters: Q2 followed the Martinez restart, while the Q3 plan included a late-quarter hydrocracker turnaround.
A dated nowcast of an already completed quarter. Price observations cover July–September only. Company results used for calibration stop at Q2 2026. Q3 results were scheduled for October 29. This October 26 estimate is stored separately from the daily tracker and will not silently refit to the Q3 result. No actual Q3 result is included.
Model estimates, USD millions except EPS and throughput. Underlying EPS assumes full conversion and excludes unmodelled special items; it is not a GAAP EPS forecast or an exact reproduction of PBF’s non-GAAP presentation.

The assumptions that move the result
Capture means reported gross refining margin excluding special items divided by the matching published benchmark. The central case uses Q2’s ratio for each region. That is a carry-forward assumption, not a proven relationship. The downside cuts capture by eight percentage points, or twelve for West Coast; the strong case adds five points. Volume uses management’s low, midpoint and high guidance respectively. The price inputs stay fixed across all three cases.
Central regional bridge. Capture and operating cost anchors come from the Q2 release; Q3 benchmark proxies and modelled margins are estimates. West Coast uses an assumed 50/50 LA/SF benchmark blend.

Across the central case’s 85.56 million barrels, a $1/bbl change in realised GRM moves model EPS by about $0.52 after tax. A five-percentage-point change in capture across all regions moves it by about $1.71. That is why benchmark tracking accuracy alone cannot establish earnings accuracy.
Scenario costs and the full earnings bridge
Quarter volume = daily throughput × 92 days. Regional GRM = adjusted benchmark proxy × assumed capture. Sum GRM less regional Opex, subtract D&A, add the residual operating bridge, subtract net interest, apply tax, then divide by assumed fully-converted shares. A loss receives no assumed tax credit.
The residual operating bridge is $-37.1 million in the central case. It reconciles rounded Q2 regional GRM and costs, plus Q2 D&A, to reported adjusted operating income. It includes corporate, logistics, equity and reconciliation effects; it is not a separately reported expense line. We do not add logistics profit or SBR earnings again.
All values below are Q3 model assumptions, USD millions except tax and shares. The Q2 financial table supplies historical anchors, not Q3 guidance for these lines.

All cases assume 26% tax and 121.066763 million shares, carrying forward Q2’s share count rather than predicting Q3 dilution. Relative to Q2, cautious Opex rises $1/bbl outside West Coast and $1.50 there; strong Opex falls $0.30 and $0.50 respectively. The residual operating bridge shifts by −$25m / $0m / +$15m. D&A is $175m / $165m / $160m and interest $45m / $40m / $35m. September’s exchangeable-note financing is known; its precise interest and diluted-share effects are not separately modelled.
Frozen inputs, regional corrections and what could be wrong
Each regional quarter average uses matched daily observations, with at least 53 of Q3’s 66 calendar weekdays and observations near both quarter boundaries. Gulf Coast, LA and SF use the separately tested median-bias corrections frozen for this forecast; East and Chicago stay raw. These corrections are estimates of missing benchmark basis, not additional profit or a RIN adjustment. The forecast uses regional guidance volumes, not the daily index’s Q2 throughput weights. Its 50/50 West split is fixed and independent of the adjustable daily-tracker control.

The largest risks are changed margin capture, refinery availability, crude slate, product yields, hedging and compliance costs. The underlying capture assumption may already reflect RIN effects; we do not subtract an EPA RIN basket again. Insurance proceeds, inventory-accounting adjustments, debt-extinguishment charges and other special items can make reported GAAP EPS materially different. This model has no validated historical EPS error band. It does not forecast cash flow, working capital or a share price.

Sum of five proxy cracks × reported regional throughput weights. West Coast is split 50/50 between LA and SF as an explicit adjustable assumption, not reported plant throughput. Historical daily curves are reweighted to this fixed latest reviewed mix; this is not a point-in-time earnings backtest. Missing any active price leg makes the index unavailable; weights are never renormalized around missing prices. All five regional benchmarks are proxies, even though individual EIA prices are observed.
Generic cracks use gasoline:diesel ratios 1:1, 3:1 or 2:1, divided by 2, 4 or 3 input barrels. PBF regional proxies use the separate jet blends listed on their cards. Positive does not mean net profitability. All component units, series identifiers, observations, weights, reported results and source links are available in the normalized data.
Market spreads are the starting point for company margins.
A crack is a product-price basket less crude cost per input barrel. PBF’s own product ratios are retained, while missing locations and grades are explicitly substituted with observed EIA prices.
Reported quarterly capture and operating expenses provide company context. This tracker does not turn a spot spread directly into net income.

What does the PBF Margin Index estimate?
It is a throughput-weighted basket of five regional gross crack proxies in USD per crude-input barrel. It describes the market price environment for PBF, before refinery operating costs. It is neither PBF realized margin nor an earnings or share-price forecast.
Which PBF regional weights are used?
East Coast, Mid-Continent, Gulf Coast and combined West Coast throughput come from the latest reviewed PBF quarterly release. Their sum is the denominator. The weight quarter, publication date, source link and each contribution are shown.
Why is there an adjustable LA share?
The reviewed earnings tables report Torrance and Martinez together as West Coast. They do not disclose separate LA and SF realized margins or throughput. The default splits West Coast equally as a visible modelling assumption; the control changes only that split.
Does the historical index avoid look-ahead bias?
No point-in-time backtest is claimed. The entire historical price curve is recomputed at the latest reviewed throughput mix. This constant-mix view isolates market moves; it does not reconstruct PBF historical portfolio weights.
What happens if one PBF proxy leg has a missing quote?
All quotes in a regional crack must share the identical EIA observation date. A missing active leg makes the composite unavailable. No interpolation, forward fill or automatic weight redistribution is used. A zero-weight leg does not constrain the index.
Which daily PBF benchmarks are exact?
None of the five daily regional curves is claimed to reproduce PBF licensed benchmarks exactly. The underlying EIA prices are observed, but grade, location or crude substitutions make the derived regional curves proxies. Each card states every substitution. A separate experimental regional view adds tested median-bias corrections for Gulf Coast, LA and SF; the headline basket stays raw because combining those corrections did not improve its test error. The Tracking accuracy section compares quarterly means with PBF published benchmarks; SF is a weak level proxy and Chicago has a large outlier in the reviewed sample.
How are the PBF regional product proportions handled?
The PBF January 2026 benchmark appendix includes half diesel and half jet in the Mid-Continent and LA distillate barrel, and one quarter diesel plus three quarters jet in SF. These proportions are retained, with unavailable prices replaced only by explicitly named observed proxies.
How are standard 2-1-1, 4-3-1 and 3-2-1 cracks normalized?
Convert gasoline and diesel from USD/gallon to USD/barrel using 42. Weight their proceeds by 1:1, 3:1 or 2:1 respectively, divide by 2, 4 or 3 crude-input barrels, then subtract the chosen crude price. Standard cracks do not contain the jet blend used in some PBF benchmarks.
Why is New York gasoline marked as a PBF proxy?
The free EIA NY Harbor series is conventional regular gasoline, whereas PBF benchmark documentation names RBOB. The tracker shows the EIA grade honestly and does not relabel it as a RBOB futures contract or the missing spot assessment.
How are Chicago, LLS, ANS and San Francisco gaps treated?
Chicago gasoline and diesel use Gulf Coast product prices as proxies. LLS and ANS use Europe Brent as a proxy. SF product legs use LA gasoline, LA CARB diesel and Gulf Coast jet. No missing exact assessment receives a fabricated price.
Which PADD areas matter for the PBF tracker?
The weekly panel covers US totals plus PADD 1, 2, 3 and 5, corresponding to the four reported PBF refining regions. PADD totals describe all reporting market participants and cannot identify PBF plant inventories, operating rates or outages.
How does the PBF panel define seasonal inventory gaps?
Gasoline, distillate and kerosene-type jet stocks are compared with the same ISO week and weekday in the preceding five ISO years. Five observations are required. Gasoline stocks include blending components and distillate includes heating oil.
How is demand growth measured in the PBF panel?
National product supplied is averaged across exactly four consecutive weeks and compared with a four-week mean ending in the matching ISO week of the prior ISO year. It is an implied domestic consumption proxy and can be revised. Missing weeks invalidate the comparison.
Are regional PBF demand and exports estimated from national totals?
No. Weekly product supplied and exports are displayed for the US. Stocks and refinery utilization have separate PADD series. The tracker does not allocate national demand or exports to PBF or to regions without a matching series.
How often do PBF market inputs refresh?
A focused daily collector refreshes EIA daily spot observations and checks the weekly physical and EPA blocks. Recently retrieved weekly blocks can be reused for up to 18 hours. Provider data may lag collection; observation, source-update and retrieval dates are kept separate.
Which PBF realized margin is compared with the benchmark?
The quarterly table uses reported gross refining margin excluding special items, per barrel of throughput, a non-GAAP measure. GAAP gross margin is stored separately. Refinery operating expense is shown separately and is not already deducted from the reported gross refining margin.
How is the PBF capture gap calculated?
For East, Mid-Continent and Gulf, subtract the published same-quarter PBF benchmark from reported same-region gross refining margin excluding special items. For West, the LA/SF benchmark blend is explicitly assumed using the selected LA share. The difference is descriptive and includes costs, yields, grade and location effects; it is not pure operating efficiency.
Are D4 and D6 prices the same as PBF RIN expense?
No. EPA prices are volume-weighted separated-RIN transaction prices by transfer week, RIN vintage and D-code. The EPA ratio of price-times-volume sums to volume sums aggregates QAP types correctly. PBF regional RIN expense is not disclosed in the reviewed earnings releases and stays unavailable.
Are crude discounts available in the PBF tracker?
The reviewed quarterly PBF market tables publish WTI minus WCS, Dated Brent minus Maya, WTI minus LLS and WTI minus ANS. These are dated quarterly indicators, not current daily quotes. Missing live LLS, ANS, WCS and Maya prices remain listed as coverage gaps.
Can I subtract the PBF RIN basket again to estimate earnings?
The effective RIN basket is a reported market indicator, not a clean standalone regional PBF expense. Actual margin capture can already reflect compliance effects. Subtracting it again can double count. Earnings also require throughput, outages, operating expenses, logistics, corporate costs, depreciation, financing, taxes and share count. New quarterly filings require review before entering the report ledger. A separate frozen Q3 2026 earnings estimate adds explicit capture, volume, cost, financing, tax and share assumptions; it is not the daily index and is not a GAAP EPS forecast.
